SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Board of Education voted to relax attendance requirements slightly for the 2020-2021 school year, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Utah schools must be in session for 180 days every year, for a minimum of 990 hours. But for the coming school year, the board has waived the 990 hours requirement.

The goal is to give school districts flexibility in putting together their plans for reopening. Each district must still request an exception to the attendance requirements and offer evidence of how they will ensure high-quality instruction takes place.

All districts must submit reopening plans to the state board of education by Aug. 1.

How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus

COVID-19 coronavirus spreads person to person, similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet)
  • If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities.)
  • Get a flu shot.
