SALT LAKE CITY —  The Canyons School District has postponed the first day of school by a week to allow for teachers and other staff to prepare.

Schools in the Canyons district will move the first day of classes from Aug. 17 to Aug. 24. The Salt Lake School District also recently voted to postpone the return to classes.

According to the district, most students will begin school on Aug. 24, and preschool and kindergarten will begin later that week on Thursday, Aug. 27.

The reason for postponing the first day

The Canyons Board of Education said they made the decision to give teachers and principles more time to prepare their plans and buildings before students arrive.

Jeff Haney, a spokesperson with Canyons School District mentioned parents, teachers, and staff called for pushing back the start date.

“We’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from the people in our community telling us this was a good decision to allow everyone that breathing room before the start of school,” said Haney.

The extra week will give staff enough time to secure safety measures inside the school buildings and teachers’ time to adapt to the new workspace.

“The change to the academic calendar was made after much reflection, review, and thoughtful input from parents, teachers and students,” said Nancy Tingey, President of the Canyons Board of Education. “The slight postponement of the start of the school year honors requests from our hard-working teachers while also minimizing disruption to families’ schedules.”

Haney said while school registration is still happening, roughly 25% of parents have chosen remote learning options.

Online enrollment began in July.
