It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and like life keeps throwing curveballs your way that makes things more difficult. Although it may not feel like it, it’s normal to feel stressed out, and there are many ways you can reduce it. Read on for how you can maintain your mental health and lower your stress levels when emotions start to feel intense.

Take deep breaths

Deep breathing helps lower anxiety and tells the body to relax if you are stressed out. As the breath slows down, so does the mind. Breathing is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to help lower your heart rate and help you recenter.

Go for a walk

Walking helps to reset your intentions and ease up tension that builds up in the shoulders, neck, and upper back. Stepping outside is a great way to clear your head and become familiar with the place you live. It’s a good grounding meditation practice, since you can focus on the present with every step.

Call a friend

We are social creatures, and sometimes talking it out can lift a huge weight off. Send a text to someone you love and trust, and ask if you can share some of your thoughts with them when they have the time. In most cases, the people who care about you will be happy to help you through whatever struggles you may be facing.

Practice yoga

Yoga and other mindfulness exercises are a great way to work things out as you move your emotions through your body. You can practice yoga at any time throughout the day, and in many different formats.

Eat healthy foods

Cut back on sugars and alcohol to build up your immunity and clear your mind. Fresh or cooked vegetables, fruits, and whole grains help the body balance. With greater physical health, mental health becomes much easier to manage.

Put the phone down

Refreshing your email or social media feed can be distracting from the present moment. Set a timer and put the phone in another room or on “do not disturb” while you read a book or take on a craft.

Spend time with animals if you are stressed out

Sometimes we just need a break from people, and spending time with animals can be extremely therapeutic. Take some time to give your full attention to your pet, or visit a local animal shelter or cat cafe if you don’t have one to get some quality pet time.

Get a massage

A massage is a powerful tool that releases stress and transforms it into wholeness and relaxation. It not only helps the physical body, but has profound healing effects on the mind as well.

Reach out to a counselor

At a certain point it may be appropriate to reach out to a professional. If you’re trying all of the above and aren’t noticing any changes or shifts in attitude, find a therapist to help you sort out your mental health. There are even some great mental health and counseling apps that are getting great reviews too. Reach out to your health insurance provider to help you find someone near you.

Try ketamine therapy

Ketamine is a new therapy used to treat anxiety and PTSD that is showing promising results in many uses. By reconnecting your neurotransmitters, patients are able to reprocess traumatic memories and maintain their mental health for longer periods of time after use than other antidepressants.
