14 schools in Jordan School District moving online

Nov 12, 2020, 10:19 AM | Updated: 10:32 am

WEST JORDAN, Utah — The Jordan School District has voted to move 14 schools online during an emergency meeting after experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases and absences.

Board members said many of the schools that have been moved to online schooling are seeing 25% or more of their populations out on quarantine, and more that are absent.

The board moved for the nine middle schools and five high schools to start virtual classes that will last through Nov. 30.

“We are very concerned about the high rise in the number of COVID cases,”  board member Tracy Miller said.

“The burden has just become so high on the staff and teachers at this school that we’re concerned.”

The move will have nine of the district’s middle schools, Copper Mountain, Elk Ridge, Fort Herriman, Hidden Valley, Mountain Creek, South Jordan, Sunset Ridge, West Hills and West Jordan begin online classes on Friday, using Thursday as a waiver day to prepare.

Herriman, Riverton, West Jordan, Mountain Ridge and Bingham High School will all also transition to virtual school over the next week.

The district said lunch will be provided curbside at each of the schools from 11 a.m. to noon.

Some parents unhappy with the move

Wednesday’s emergency meeting was attended online by more than 2,000 participants and a few who attended in person.

Joe Maio has two children in the district. He said he wished the district would have had a public comment period rather than just asking for feedback via email.

“I don’t think they’re taking into consideration the long-term effects of what’s actually happening here,” Maio said. “I understand things are happening and we have some cases going up. The cure has now become worse than the disease.”
