SALT LAKE CITY — An area of downtown Salt Lake City was closed to traffic on Saturday as emergency officials and the Utah Department of Health investigated the scene of a fire that injured two people.

The fire was located in an apartment building at 360 South and 400 West. SLC Fire responded around 1 p.m. according to Captain Anthony Burton.

Burton said the call came into emergency officials as an explosion from a refrigerator in an apartment on the third floor. When firefighters arrived they detected “light smoke” on that floor and executed an aggressive response with help from the building’s sprinkler system.

Two people at the scene were treated and released for smoke inhalation.

When the fire was out, investigators entered the apartment in question where they found “suspicious substances” according to Burton. That’s when Hazmat and health officials were called to the scene.

An investigation is ongoing, but SLC fire officials say the apartment building is safe to be occupied by other residents.
