Early Saturday delays to the slopes in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons...

SALT LAKE CITY — After a fresh dumping of snow at area ski resorts overnight, folks are heading out for some skiing in high numbers early Saturday morning, causing major delays just getting to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The Alta Marshal said in a tweet, “The same endless line of cars we’re seeing this morning will all be trying to leave Alta at around the same time this afternoon. Consider leaving early today to avoid the mess. FYI traffic is currently taking up to an hour just to reach the mouth of Little Cottonwood.”

Alta officials say the Wildcat lot was 75% full as of about 7:30 Saturday morning.  Parking was expected to fill up by 8:30 a.m.

UDOT has issued a congestion alert urging people to expect delays for both Big and Little Cottonwood canyons by early Saturday morning.

Also, UDOT avalanche division said in a Tweet that all-terrain North of Little Cottonwood Creek, Superior through Cardiff backcountry is closed. Please stay EAST of Cardiff Bowl and areas underneath through today at 4 p.m.

KSL Meteorologist Kristen Van Dyke says snow should move completely out of the area by Saturday afternoon ahead of the next round of snow in the forecast on Wednesday.
