SALT LAKE CITY — The Granite School District is offering cash bonuses to substitute teachers. It’s an effort to reduce the sub shortage affecting many districts across Utah.

Granite is just one of several districts suffering a substitute teacher shortage. Superintendent Dr. Richard Nye says they are always willing to try something new to meet the needs of their schools.

Starting in November, the district says substitutes will be offered the following:

  • Hourly subs who complete at least five jobs in one month will be given a $50 bonus on top of regular pay.
  • Hourly subs who complete at least ten jobs in one month will be given a $100 bonus on top of regular pay.
  • Hourly subs who complete at least 15 jobs or more in one month will be given a $150 bonus on top of regular pay.

Additionally, the bonuses will be offered retroactively. Substitutes who met the above criteria in October will also receive extra cash.

“I implore anyone who has even considered the job of a substitute teacher to take a look at all Granite has to offer,” says Dr. Nye in a statement provided to KSL.

Granite School District plans to offer cash bonuses to substitute teachers through the end of this school year.
