Hit and run kills woman, injures child in Salt Lake City; suspect in custody

SALT LAKE CITY — An investigation continues after Salt Lake City Police said a woman was killed and a child was injured in a hit and run accident.
Police said that, based on an initial investigation, the suspect’s vehicle was traveling east on 1700 South when it left the roadway and hit a woman and child on a sidewalk near 900 East.
Emergency officials performed life-saving measures on the woman, who died in transit on the way to a hospital.
Police say that the injured child was hospitalized in critical condition.
A search quickly began for the driver of the vehicle. Salt Lake Police said the driver was located, and that he was safely taken into custody.
The area of the accident, 1700 South between 900 East and 1000 East, was expcted to be remain closed for several hours on Tuesday afternoon.
