SALT LAKE CITY — There’s a new telephone scam according to the Utah Attorney General’s office. It involves someone posing as an officer from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force known as ICAC, and asking for money.

The Utah Attorney General’s office said they’ve received several reports about this task force scam, described as disturbing by a task force official.

“At this point, we’re not sure of the origin of the calls, and the best way to warn the community is to have people protect themselves,” said Commander Alan White in a press release.

“To learn there is a person or group impersonating our organization is disturbing. People need to know that our operations are heavily researched and largely undercover. We very selectively do community outreach.”

ICAC Commander Alan White told KSL NewsRadio that if they need to contact someone, they don’t use the phone.

“That would be a face-to-face contact. We would go to their home,” White said.

The Utah task force is part of a national network that includes thousands of federal, state, and city law enforcement entities. They investigate and prosecute people accused of committing crimes against children.

The Utah Attorney General’s office urged anyone who receives one of these calls to contact the Attorney General’s ICAC Tip line number at 801-281-1211.

Kira Hoffelmeyer contributed to this report.
