A high-quality front entry door makes a solid first impression, but also keeps your home safe from the elements. As temperatures drop and the colder season nears, it’s time to think about weatherproofing doors.

Seasonal maintenance ensures your home is safe and up to date. Don’t procrastinate; make sure your home is comfortable before winter! Read on for tips to weatherproof your home.

Benefits of weatherproofing doors

The most significant benefit of weatherproofing is that it is cost-effective. It will pay for itself in savings within months of use and continues to save you money long after.

Gaps in doors can increase your utility bills by letting in breezes, making it colder or hotter depending on the temperature outside. Those gaps can also make your air filters work harder, with more outside air coming in.

Another benefit of weatherproofing is that it ensures your home is more energy efficient, so it takes less power from the grid to heat or cool your home.

Weatherstripping, door seals, or caulking are some temporary DIY solutions. They can be an okay solution if you’re looking for something quick that you can do yourself. Ensure you apply the moisture barrier and caulking properly to prevent rain or melting snow from seeping through the cracks.

Check to see if your door is hanging correctly. Lining up hinges to your frame and make sure everything is level. In older homes, you might notice a door frame slightly out of alignment. Check for this before you begin any new installation or projects.

After entry door installation, check the edges and top of the door for protection against moisture infiltration. Even doors made of steel or fiberglass can be at risk for mold, mildew, or rot.

You should also check to see if your door is warped. Wooden doors may have moisture that leaks over time, causing them to change shape. Regular sealing helps prevent this from happening.

While more expensive upfront, a longer-term solution to replace and install a new door can ensure a higher return on your investment. In some homes, this may be a necessary upgrade.

Hiring a professional is the best solution to weatherproof your home. Trying to install a door on your own may void the warranty or end up giving you more problems in the long run. A professional brings years of experience to ensure the work gets done correctly. It also helps take some of the burdens off you to give you more time for other home improvement tasks!
