HURRICANE, Utah — Hurricane Police are cracking down on drivers running red lights.

According to a Facebook posting, authorities in Hurricane have issued 87 citations for running red lights in 60 hours. That is roughly 1.5 violations per hour.

According to the post, many of excuses the officers were given include the following:

  • “I’m in a hurry.”
  • “I didn’t see it.”
  • “I thought I could beat the light.”
  • “I looked up and noticed it was yellow and didn’t think I had time to stop.”

Police ask if any of these excuses are justified in potentially causing an accident or hitting a pedestrian. Additionally, police say two-thirds of those individuals pulled over live in Washington County.

Hurricane Police offer two tips for drivers.

  • Pay attention. In nearly all instances, officers were sitting in marked patrol cars in plain sight of the red light.
  • Slow down. More than likely, drivers are only going to save 30 seconds or less by attempting to beat the red light.
