SALT LAKE CITY — Leaders at the Utah State Capitol got their first look Tuesday at how, The Point, a new development at the site of the old state prison, will look like.

The Point Development unveiled how 100 acres would be developed in the middle of a 15-minute city. The 100 acres is part of the 600 acres left behind by the old prison. In addition to tall commercial buildings and dozens of apartment complexes, the city would also have a river running through the middle of it and a large park.

Leaders happy with plans for The Point

Abbey Ehman, of Innovation Point Partners, says the plans fit with everything they are hoping to accomplish.

“I think we are beyond excited to be at the table, working with the land authority to bring this to life,” she said. “It is truly the vision of the state of Utah and Utahns. And we are the stewards in executing that vision.”

This is just the first phase. So, the state is years, if not decades, away from seeing this model become reality. And plans could still change in the future. Developers say everything will depend on demand and the market.

But state leaders say they like what they are seeing so far.
