SALT LAKE CITY — The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday plans for the reconstruction of the Anchorage Alaska Temple.

According to a news release, construction is expected to begin in early 2024, with its completion set for the summer of 2026.

The news release says the new temple will be built on the same property where a meetinghouse is currently located. Additionally, the temple will remain open during construction.

The temple will increase from 11,930 square feet to nearly 30,000 square feet.

Once the new temple is dedicated, the current temple will be decommissioned, according to the news release. A new meetinghouse will be built on the land of the current temple.

The Anchorage Alaska Temple was dedicated in January 1999 by then-President Gordon B. Hinckley.

Dates for an open house and dedication of the new temple will be announced at a later date.
