SALT LAKE CITY — Over the past six months, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been returned to veterans in the state of Utah.
Utah State Treasurer Marlo Oaks said his office has been matching veterans in Utah with unclaimed money.
Oaks said they’ve been able to return more than $700,000 to vets since November.
“We think that veterans probably have a higher percentage of unclaimed property because they tend to move more frequently than the civilian population.”
Oaks said they matched records from the Department of Veterans and Military Affairs with unclaimed money.
During that process, Oaks said they were cautious to protect the vets’ privacy, but they did find quite a few who had money coming.
“We absolutely are very careful in how we do this. And that’s why having both agencies that use Department of Technology services, that was really important.”
Anybody in the state can search for unclaimed money online.
