Two high school students arrested after allegedly bringing firearms on Highland High campus

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police Department’s school resource officers arrested three high school students after recovering two loaded firearms Monday.
According to SLCPD, the investigation began around 1 p.m. after a school resource officer was made aware of a suspicious car parked on Highland High School’s property. Upon investigation, the officer found two Highland High students and one East High student in the car.
A press release states the officer attempted to perform a traffic stop. Following this, the three students attempted to flee the scene, with the Highland Students running into the school. The officer called for backup and safely detained the two students.
Upon detaining the two Highland students, they were found to be in possession of two loaded handguns, one of which was listed as stolen. Officers did not find any firearms on the East High student.
According to the press release, the two Highland students have been arrested. They will be booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. The East High student has been released to a legal guardian.
According to the press release, at this time, it is unknown how the students got the firearms.
