Police said a citizen tip led them to two men who were walking along the street near 3rd East and 7th South hiding their faces with hoodies and ski masks.
While talking with the men, identified as 19-year-old Angelo Crippen and 19-year-old Angelo Gay, the SLCPD said officers found a loaded AR-15-style rifle in Gay’s pants and a vape pen they suspected had marijuana in it. Police said Gay told them he’d recently used marijuana, making it illegal for him to own a firearm.
After securing a search warrant for their car, police said they found a second rifle, as well as an additional vape pen they suspected contained marijuana.
Police booked Crippen and Gay into jail for possession of a firearm by a restricted person and other drug-related charges.
“In this situation, we had a community member see something out of the ordinary and call 9-1-1 right away,” said Chief Mike Brown in a release. “I want to commend our officers for their exceptional work in this case. While we are still in the process of trying to determine the suspects’ intent and motives, it is imperative that our officers act swiftly to protect our community members and that is what they did.”
