WASHINGTON COUNTY — Washington County search and rescue personnel were kept busy Saturday with two different rescues.
According to Sgt. Darrell Cashin, with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the first rescue operation occurred in Canaan Mountain. He says two hikers, who started out in Squirrel Canyon, got to the top of Canaan Mountain. The hikers thought there were in need of assistance, so they called for help.
Cashin says, however, the two weren’t stuck, but had just gotten off the trail. Research and rescue personnel were in contact with the hikers, instructing them on how to get down off the mountain.
A helicopter from the Department of Public Safety wasn’t available for this rescue, as it was assisting the second rescue.
In the second operation, two male hikers had been hiking Pine Valley Mountain just south of Lloyds Canyon.
And according to Cashin, they had been gone for 14 hours. The call on this incident came in at 4:18 p.m.
Both hikers were out of food and water. One of the hikers was showing signs of severe dehydration, Cashin said. The other hiker went for help.
The DPS helicopter lifted the first hiker off the mountain. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. Eventually, the hiker was transported by LifeFlight to a St. George hospital.
After being lifted off the mountain, the second hiker refused treatment.
