SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol says one person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on I-80 that forced the closure of the freeway in both directions late Tuesday night.
The crash happened near 1300 East in Salt Lake City.
Authorities believe a semi-truck truck driver lost control after their brakes failed leading to the fiery crash.
“We don’t believe it was a medical issue. We believe it had to have been something mechanical because he was still trying to avoid traffic and appears [to be] going around through the cones but eventually just ran out of space,” said Sgt. Scott Attridge with the UHP.
UHP Sgt. Cam Roden told KSL NewsRadio that three to four vehicles were involved with at least two of them being semi-trucks.
Multiple lanes of I-80 were closed in both directions for several hours. The freeway reopened around 6:30 a.m.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
