SALT LAKE CITY — One of the biggest questions leading into the University of Utah‘s football season-opener Thursday night against the University of Florida is if Utah quarterback Cam Rising will play.

KSL Sports Utes Insider Michelle Bodkin tells KSL NewsRadio it appears Rising will likely miss the game.

“It’s gone back and forth a few times,” she said. “But it is sounding like Cam will not be playing on Thursday night, and not because there’s anything wrong. It’s just abundance of caution.”

She says Thursday night is just one game in a long season.

“This is just kind of recognizing that the 2023 season for this team is a marathon and not a race,” Bodkin said.

Utah season-opener and a return of Cam Rising

Bodkin says Rising’s ultimate return may be determined on the outcome of Thursday evening’s contest.

“If it goes smoothly,” she said. “I think they feel good about going into Baylor. And finishing out the out-of-conference schedule with Weber State the following week without him.”

Overall, Bodkin says the team has depth and talent at many of the key positions. Those positions include along the offensive line and at running back.

“They have four guys potentially that they could send out that would be starters anywhere,” Bodkin said of the running backs.

Thursday evening’s game at Rice-Eccles Stadium will kick at 6 p.m.

Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News can be heard on weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m.
