18-year-old dies after Sugar House shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a shooting in Sugar House that left one man dead early Sunday morning.
According to a press release, the SLCPD said it received calls of a shooting at 909 East 2100 South around 1:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found an 18-year-old man on the ground with a gunshot wound and began life-saving efforts. Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition.
The SLCPD has since confirmed that the victim, J’kye Lovell Ray Watkins, died at a local hospital.
Police said they closed several blocks as they conducted their investigation and witnesses told them the potential shooter’s car left in an unknown direction.
The SLCPD doesn’t believe there is an immediate threat to the public.
According to police, a fight occurred just before the shooting, but they have not yet determined if it had any connection to the incident.
Detectives believe several witnesses left before police arrived. Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to come forward.
