SALT LAKE CITY — A restaurant on Beck St. in Salt Lake City was severely damaged in a fire Saturday morning. The restaurant is called the Garage, transformed into a restaurant from a 1940s auto repair shop.
Batallion Chief Dan Walker with the Salt Lake City Fire Department said they received a call about a fire just before 10 a.m. He said that heavy smoke was already coming from the building when crews arrived.
“The crews were able to make access into the building where they found a pretty good deep-seated fire mostly up in the attic spaces,” he explained.
Walker said it took about 40 minutes to put out the fire with 30 firefighters working to control the flames. He said there were people in the restaurant when the fire broke out but everyone was able to leave the building safely. There were no injuries to firefighters or those in the building.
Walker said though the Garage is near the oil refinery on Beck St., he doesn’t believe the refinery was ever at risk.
“The oil refinery… did deploy their fire crews and they were on standby,” he said. “But there was a good distance between the structure and the refinery.”
Southbound Beck St. was shut down for about an hour while crews extinguished the flames. Walker said crews are still investigating the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage.
