SALT LAKE CITY– the Salt Lake City Police Department responded to a call on Saturday near Faultline Park, initiating an investigation into a domestic violence-related incident involving a stabbing and arson that left two individuals injured and sent both to the hospital.
At approximately 1:19 a.m., SCLPD received a call of a disturbance.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, a 22-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 23-year-old roommate.
After the alleged stabbing, the victim hid in a downstairs part of the residence. The suspect reportedly poured an accelerant on the floor and set the area on fire.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department prevented the fire from spreading extensively, although damage related to the accelerant, smoke, and water was reported. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, minimizing structural harm.
The victim, with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, was also transported to a nearby hospital.
Police placed the suspect in custody, who was also sent to a hospital to receive medical treatment for minor injuries related to the fire.
During transportation to the hospital, it was reported that one of the ambulances crashed due to the winter weather conditions. Only minor damage occurred, and no injuries were reported.
The suspect, whose name was withheld, will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail after he is discharged from the hospital.
He will face charges, including aggravated assault and aggravated arson.
A police officer also sustained minor injuries due to smoke exposure during the arrest but is in recovery.
SLCPD added that it is important to note that charges are currently allegations, and individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
