SALT LAKE CITY — An unexpected vote against the motion to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was cast by Utah Rep. Blake Moore. His procedural move added a twist to the proceedings in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday. The move allows GOP lawmakers in the House to revisit the vote at a later day.

Republican House lawmakers were unsuccessful in impeaching Mayorkas, with a final vote of 214 to 216. Mayorkas was facing impeachment for his handling of the country’s southern border.

Four Republicans voted not to impeach Mayorkas: Colorado Rep. Ken Buck, Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher, California Rep. Tom McClintock, and Utah Rep. Blake Moore. But Moore changed his vote at the last minute, allowing the House to bring up the issue when they feel it’s more advantageous.

Rep. Moore posted on X to explain the procedural move.

Rep. Burgess Owens, the Republican representative of Utah’s 4th Congressional District voted in favor of the Mayorkas impeachment. In a post on X, Owens said Mayorkas had “failed to uphold his oath of office.”
