SALT LAKE CITY— First, our clocks sprung forward. Now, gas prices are rising.

According to AAA, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Utah has jumped 38 cents in just the last month. The average cost in the Beehive State now sits at $3.33 a gallon.

Why another hike in gas prices?

According to AAA Spokesperson Julian Paredes, it’s normal for gas prices to rise during this time of year.

Paredes told KSL NewsRadio this is also the time of year when some refineries will shut down for maintenance.

Additionally, he said some refineries are already switching to a summer blend of gasoline.

The warm-weather blend is a little more eco-friendly when temperatures rise, however, it also costs more. Paredes said the blend alone can bump prices 10 to 15 cents a gallon.

On the bright side, today’s prices are much better than this time last year.

Just one year ago, the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.81.

Paredes said if this year is anything like a typical one, prices will likely keep rising a few cents per week through summer.
