SALT LAKE CITY– Today is the Utah Red Cross Giving Day, a day for people and communities to come together and help those in need.
Over 800 people were saved last year thanks to the efforts of Utah donors and volunteers. Benjamin Donner, the executive director of the Red Cross Utah, shared his own story of how donors stepped up to save his life.
“With a serious loss of blood, I was rushed to the emergency room here in Draper where I found out I needed four units of blood to stay alive,” said Donner.
That life-saving blood came from anonymous donations through the Red Cross.
However, giving blood is just one way to help. According to the Red Cross, community donations help them provide shelter, food, and emotional support in times of crisis.
Additionally, Donner said volunteers are just as critical to their efforts as donors are. The Red Cross has a list of volunteer opportunities on their website.
“Now, I say thank you on behalf of my 16-year-old. They say thank you for keeping their dad here. And that brings it home in a way that I never expected but, I found myself on the other end of that,” said Donner.
