HIGHLAND, Utah — The Highland City Council called a special meeting for Monday night to discuss whether they want to pursue a split from the Alpine School District.
According to a meeting agenda obtained by KSL, the council will first see a presentation on the feasibility of splitting Utah’s largest school district.
Second, the council will vote on a resolution, “directing the Mayor and staff to negotiate and execute an interlocal agreement with entities within the current boundaries of the Alpine School District for the creation of one or more new school districts,” the agenda read.
The meeting comes just days after a Florida-based consulting firm recommended that if the district chooses to split, it do so in two. The recommendation came after months of study and at least a few weeks of public input.
The Alpine School District Board still needs to vote on whether or not to adopt that recommendation. If they do, voters would then decide the fate of the district’s future in November.
The special meeting in Highland happens Monday at 8 p.m. You can stream the meeting on Highland City’s YouTube channel.
An attempt in Orem to split from the Alpine School District failed last November after voters chose to stay within the district.
