WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The Laundry Project recently held a free laundry event in West Valley City on May 1.
The Laundry Project is a humanitarian effort that provides laundry services for free in lower-income communities.
Executive director Jason Sowell believes clean laundry is a basic need after food and shelter. He said so many kids need clean laundry, simply because it’s not as accessible to them and their families.
Sowell said families were pleasantly surprised when they stumbled across the event. At first, they thought there was a catch.
“Once they’re kind of past that, there’s a lot of thankfulness, there’s a lot of emotion,” Sowell said. “For a lot of those families, it really is a financial burden that they carry.”
Utah became the twentieth state to host The Laundry Project which has washed almost 286,000 loads of laundry across the nation in the past 15 years.

Sowell is planning the next Utah event for later this summer. He encourages others to host a similar event.
“If they feel like they have the resources, and want to try to pull together, we’ll absolutely work with them and help coach them and get it put together,” Sowell said.
