GUARDSMAN PASS, Utah — The Utah Department of Transportation said that Guardsman Pass will close “as early as” July 29 for road re-pavement.
UDOT said in a Facebook post that the project will happen in two phases.
The closure will impact the area between the winter gate and the pass overlook. A map provided by UDOT showed the closure area beginning near Brighton Ski Resort.
After phase one is completed, it is expected to reopen on Friday, August 2.
Then, on Monday, August 5, the road will close again for phase two.
It is expected to reopen for the second time on August 9.
Traffic will be rerouted during the project. UDOT said that travelers can use I-80, which moves through Parley’s Canyon, or U.S.-189, which moves through Provo Canyon.
SR-190 & Guardsman Pass preservation project
UDOT’s website said that the pavement preservation project on SR-190 began in June. The main project goal is to increase road safety.
Additionally, the project is meant to smooth out the ride up the canyon. While other sections of the road have been repaved, drivers have experienced delays and one-way alternating traffic.
UDOT’s website previously warned drivers of up to 15-minute delays during the pavement of other portions. Since the road will be closed while the pass is paved, UDOT has not warned of any delays for the next two phases.
