SALT LAKE CITY — A big change is coming to the leadership structure of the Salt Lake City Police Department. SLCPD will replace the position of captain with the position of commander.
SLCPD spokesman Brent Weisberg said the Salt Lake City Police Chief will appoint the new commanders.
“The responsibility for identifying and selecting the strongest candidates for the position of police commander rests exclusively with Police Chief Mike Brown,” said Weisberg.
The Salt Lake City Mayor must also approve the Commanders. They will still have the captain’s duties but are also expected to become more efficient, innovative, and accountable.
It’s unknown how many commanders there will be, however, SLCPD has encouraged its seven current captains to apply. If a captain chooses not to apply for a commander position or isn’t selected, they will be given severance.
