MURRAY, Utah — A farmers market in Murray is finding new ways to help kids try different fruits and vegetables.
Every weekend the Murray Park Farmers Market invites kids to join the Power of Produce Club. The club rewards kids for trying a different fruit or vegetable of the day.
Utah Farm Bureau Manager Adelaide Corey-Disch said the concept is simple.
“Once they complete or at least try whatever it is we’re offering that day, then we actually give them, what we call, ‘POP bucks,'” she said. “They get this pretend two-dollar bill, but it’s real money and they decide how they want to spend it.”
Kids can use their POP bucks to buy fruit or vegetables from any of the vendors on site.
Corey-Disch hopes the program helps kids understand where their food comes from while making it fun to make their own food choices.
“It’s cool to see how we can engage everyone in different ways,” Corey-Disch said. “Kids aren’t always that engaged at the market because it can be boring. It’s like going grocery shopping.”
The POP Club is supported by the Farmers Market Coalition and Zions Bank. It’s free and exclusive to the Murray Park Farmers Market every Saturday.
