WILLARD, Utah — The body of a man who went missing on Saturday has been recovered from Willard Bay. According to the Utah Department of Natural Resources, he was found in an area known as Freeway Bay.
The DNR said a ranger found 51-year-old Robert Mittendorf from Weber County this morning.
According to the DNR, he was swimming with his son when a storm suddenly rolled in.
The pair became separated from their boat. Mittendorf’s son swam back to the boat, grabbing a life jacket in an attempt to save his father.
However, the man disappeared beneath the water. He did not resurface.
Murky water complicated search efforts which involved several law enforcement agencies and search and rescue teams.
Willard Bay death prompts water safety reminders
Following the accident, the DNR has reminded lake visitors to exercise caution around water.
Pay attention to the weather forecast while you are on or near the water. Monitor your surroundings for unexpected changes or the formation of dark clouds and lightning.
If you are swimming, get out of the water if the weather takes a turn for the worst.
When you are near the water, the DNR said you should always wear a life jacket. Never go swimming alone.
“It’s essential to be prepared with the appropriate safety gear and ensure someone knows your location and expected return time,” read the DNR press release.
