SALT LAKE CITY — Utah-based mattress company Purple Innovation is shuttering its two manufacturing plants in Salt Lake City and Grantsville. An estimated 220 employees will lose their jobs.
The news wasn’t a surprise to Scott Cuthbertson, President and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCU). However, he said from adversity comes opportunity.
He said the EDCU has a lot of clients looking to set up manufacturing operations here.
“We have currently 130 active projects, or companies, that are wanting to expand or relocate into Utah,” he said.
Cuthbertson said the companies like Utah’s close access to the West Coast and its talented workforce.
“[Utah has] access to the coastal markets on the west, having interstate infrastructure running in all directions, robust rail access [and a] major expansion of an international airport,” he said.
The mattress company will still have its headquarters and distribution center in Utah. However, Purple is consolidating its manufacturing in Georgia.
“[I] was happy to see that their headquarters will remain in Utah and that they have plans to open a new distribution facility in the state as well,” Cuthbertson said.
