SALT LAKE CITY — A semi truck caught fire near the Parleys Canyon exit, completely closing westbound traffic at the mouth of the canyon for several hours on Monday.
Westbound traffic on I-80 reopened by late afternoon on Monday but the Utah Department of Transportation said to expect delays of two to three hours.
Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol said the fire occurred just prior to the off-ramp near Foothill Drive.
Kelly Bird with Unified Fire Authority said it appears that the brakes on the semi truck caught fire. The trailer of the truck was reportedly hauling frozen food.
The fire spread up the mountain about 20 feet, but was put out quickly. However, the trailer is at a “total loss.”
The driver received no injuries, Roden said, as he was able to get the “driver cab” disconnected.
UHP expects cleanup to last one to two hours.
