SALT LAKE CITY — Avelo Airlines announced it will bring its  ‘Wine Travels Free’ program to Salt Lake City International Airport. The program allows passengers to transport wine for free across the Western U.S.

According to the press release, Avelo travels to 14 destinations throughout the West. The program will launch with Avelo Airlines service in Salt Lake City on Oct. 24.

Per a press release, the program will provide nonstop flights between Salt Lake City International Airport and Sonoma County, Calif.

Like checked luggage, customers over 21 years old can check one case of wine each at no additional cost. The case can contain up to 12 bottles and weigh 50 pounds or less.

Before checking their wine, passengers must ensure their package meets Avelo’s guidelines. Bottles should be secured in a box with bubble wrap or cardboard liners to prevent breakage.

Avelo’s press release said the company is “not responsible for providing packing supplies at the airport.”

Then, customers are to present the wine to an Avelo employee at the airport, along with any checked baggage.

Founder and CEO Andrew Levy said that the program originally began in Sonoma County, where the airline is based.

“The ‘Wine Travels Free’ program has been a success, garnering appreciation from our Customers. Now, wine lovers throughout the Western U.S. … can take advantage of our program,” said Levy.

What about Utah liquor laws?

According to Section 32B of Utah’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, anyone entering the state may bring up to nine liters of alcohol with them. People must privately consume any liquor brought into the state  cannot resell it.

A standard bottle of wine contains 750 milliliters. Per the Macy’s Wine Shop, one case of 12 bottles is about equal to Utah’s limit of nine liters.

“We’re making it easier than ever to share your love for wine with family and friends or to simply bring a taste of your favorite Avelo West Coast destination home,” said Levy.
