SALT LAKE CITY — Efforts are underway to make it easier for people to register and start a small business in Utah.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says small businesses represent 99.3% of all companies in Utah. The state had 71,877 new business applications in 2023.
The Director of the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, Adam Watson admitted that the process of registering a small business was outdated and complicated. So, the company upgraded the registration platform.
“We asked a few companies that file frequently with the division to beta test this before we launched and we received some very positive reviews about that,” he said.
Watson said the upgrade brings modernization and added security.
“Before there was no security feature at all … anyone could file on their entity, make changes to their entity. But now they can decide upfront who will have the authority to access that entity’s filing,” said Watson.
This update represents phase one of two. Phase two is set to roll out in November.
