3-year-old Spanish Fork girl falls from 2nd story window

SPANISH FORK — A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition at Primary Children’s Hospital after police say she fell out of a 2nd story window in Spanish Fork.

Spanish Fork Police Sgt. Chris Sheriff says a bed was against the open window, and the girl put her hand on the screen and fell out.

“The screen gave way and out she went,” said Sgt Sheriff.

“We believe she hit the porch steps down below,” he said, adding that it was a fall of about 13 feet onto the concrete.

First, she was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional, then flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.

Statistics on similar accidents show the height of the fall, force of impact and surface influence the severity of injuries.

The Safe Kids Worldwide 2015 Report says about eight children under age 5 die each year from falling out a window, and more than 3,300 are injured.  Falls from windows were more common in spring and summer months.

Children under 5 years were more likely to suffer serious injuries from a window fall and three times more likely to suffer a head injury.
