SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will begin a three-year renovation of the historic St. George Temple beginning in November of this year.

In a news release sent out today, the church did not offer specific details but said the temple is scheduled to be re-opened in 2022.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to renovate the historic building in October 2018, during the religion’s semi-annual general conference. The new list of temples included a 2nd one to be built in Washington County, Utah.

The St. George Temple was dedicated on April 6th, 1877.   It is the oldest temple still operating in the Church.

In 1975, the St. George Temple was re-dedicated following another renovation.

The church has more than 200 temples either in operation, in construction, or announced.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints view the temples as sacred places of worship.
