Snowmobiler killed in avalanche

COALVILLE, Summit County — A Mona man was killed in an avalanche Saturday while snowmobiling near Coalville.

Jason Lyman, 49, was trapped beneath the snow for roughly 30 minutes before two fellow riders succeeded in digging him out, according to Lt. Andrew Wright of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The other riders administered lifesaving efforts for 30 to 40 minutes until emergency personnel arrived.

Lyman was rushed to a hospital in Evanston, Wyoming by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained during the avalanche.

According to authorities, the slide occurred at 1:20 PM in the East Fork of Summit County’s Chalk Creek area. It was estimated to be 500 feet to 600 feet wide and 4 feet to 10 feet deep.

Lyman is the fourth avalanche fatality of 2019, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
