Salt Lake City, Utah – Getting healthier can feel like a massive undertaking, and let’s be honest being healthy means something different to everyone.

Small, digestible goals that eventually turn into habits can be powerful in making you feel healthier and happier. How you feel is the best way to gauge health, according to registered dietitian and host of Really Healthy Podcast, Melanie Douglass.

KSL TV anchor and reporter Shara Park joined Douglass on Really Healthy to talk about her journey over the past few years and inspired the podcast to share a few simple steps anyone can take to feel better.

Take Time For Yourself

This is the most important thing you can do to live a happier and healthier life. Take some time each day to turn your focus inward and do something that makes you happy, advised Douglass.

She mentioned this can be a workout but it can also be meditation, cooking a healthy meal or even a nap. The most important part is that you learn to recognize your value because you are worth taking time for.

An important part of being healthy has to do with how you feel about yourself and self-care is one of the best ways to grow self-love.

Keep Healthy Snacks Within Reach

A healthy snack when you start feeling hungry can prevent a spur of the moment drive-thru stop later.

“I started packing things like trail mix, pretzels and fruit leather in the console of my car so I wasn’t tempted to go through the drive-thru after work,” said Park.

Keeping things like fruit, vegetables and nuts in your desk, car or purse can keep you from feeling famished and overeating later in the day, Douglass suggested.

Avoid The Office Treat Table

Most offices have it, you know, the table where everyone brings not-so-healthy treats to share with their co-workers. One of the changes Park made as she was trying to live healthier is just saying no to the donuts, or other things, that got brought into her job.

“I just started saying no and I felt empowered by that,” said Park.

The tip above this one can help you start to avoid the treats because it will be easier to say no when you have a healthier option in your desk.
