UTA wants input on I-15 Point of the Mountain traffic troubles

DRAPER — Traffic frustration on I-15 at Point of the Mountain is nothing new. The stretch of roadway between Draper and Lehi is often littered with construction, brake lights and the not-so-occasional accident.
To help remedy the problem, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) will hold an open house for the public to weigh in on their Point of the Mountain Transit study. It examined potential corridors around Point of the Mountain. The public will be encouraged to talk about their preferences.
Ahead of the public input, Sergeant Nick Street with the Utah Highway Patrol said he has a few theories about what’s behind the problem.
“To me, those issues stem from people not giving themselves enough time to react to adverse situations on the roadway,” he said. “Because the slower you’re going the more time you have to react.”
The area has seen a drop in the speed limit, which Street said people have grown accustomed to and are now ignoring.
We implemented the 60 mph speed limit through there,” said Sgt. Street. “But now it’s kind of become the norm, drivers are getting a little more of a lead foot driving through there.”
Accidents have been a long-time concern. Street said the construction is not to blame for a spike in those numbers.
“We actually had about the same amount in 2016 before the construction started,” he said.
The open house event on Thursday will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at American Preparatory Academy.
