SALT LAKE CITY — A devastating wind storm that killed one person in Utah and left tens of thousands without power has drastically changed the meaning of weekend yard work this week, especially when it comes to green waste.

Gusting and sustained winds, in some instances at hurricane force, torn down branches and trees along with utility lines across northern Utah on September 8.

For some, cleanup began on the same day the trees came down. But others heeded the advice of utility officials, who asked residents to wait until the wind storm had passed before surveying the yard and filling up bags to take to waste facilities.

For those in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Cache counties who now need to take that bagged waste to disposal facilities, KSL Newsradio has compiled the following information.

Salt Lake County options

Salt Lake County officials say that the owners of the Salt Lake Valley Landfill have agreed to waive weather-related waste disposal at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill. This ability to drop off trees and branches for free will extend for the next two weeks.

The county reports that large contractors and commercial haulers will be charged normal rates.

Weber County

There are several options for people in Weber County to dispose of their  waste created by the windstorm.  The Green Waste Disposal Site at 1845 Monroe Blvd, and a secondary site at 720 Park Blvd.

The county asks that residents take their Green Waste Pass with them to the Green Waste Site. They will also accept an expired Green Waste Pass. If you have neither a current or expired pass, please be prepared to show your picture ID as well as a utility bill to prove residency in Weber County.

Ogden has reportedly also placed dumpsters across the city where branches and limbs can be left by residents.

Cache County

The Herald Journal reports that the city of Hyrum has set up a green waste disposal site near 6200 South and 200 West, across from the Blacksmith Fork Vet Clinic.

Paradise City officials have reportedly told residents to take green waste to the town shed driveway east of the Cracker Barrel.

The Herald Journal also reports that North Logan has created a temporary green waste site on the ground north of the green waste bin at Elk Ridge Park.

Davis County

Residents of Davis County will be able to drop off green waste to the Davis Landfill (1997 East 3500 North, in Layton) free of charge, for two weeks.  The County reports that the fee waiver will not apply to business or commercial customers. The county says that in order to utilize the free service, residents must show proof of residency. The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
