WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., informed the Senate Friday that the impeachment article against President Trump will be transmitted to the Senate on Monday.

“There will be a vote”

Delivering remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer said he has been speaking with Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., about the timing and duration of the impeachment trial.

“But make no mistake, a trial will be held in the United States Senate and there will be a vote whether to convict the president,” he said.

“I have spoken to Speaker Pelosi who informed me that the articles will be delivered to the Senate on Monday,” Schumer continued.

The delivery of the single article of impeachment charging President Trump of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate will begin the process of an impeachment trial. However, the exact timing of when that trial will begin remains unknown.

Republican input on an impeachment trial

McConnell has pushed to have the trial postponed until mid-February to allow for more time to prepare for a full trial.

“This impeachment began with an unprecedentedly fast and minimal process over in the House,” McConnell said in his remarks to the Senate on Friday.

“The sequel cannot be an insufficient Senate process that denies former President Trump his due process or damages the Senate of the presidency itself.

“Senate Republicans strongly believe we need a full and fair process where the former president can mount a defense and the Senate can properly consider the factual, legal and constitutional questions at stake.”
