SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Spencer Cox made a cameo appearance on Thursday in the Senate trial of former President Donald Trump. It comes as Sen. Mike Lee reportedly met with Mr. Trump’s defense lawyers.

Cox: “People have to be held accountable”

House impeachment manager Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., showed a total of five clips of Republican governors denouncing the former president’s actions.

One of the clips was a Jan. 11 interview of Spencer Cox on “Good Morning America.”

In that interview, Cox said it would be “good for the nation” if Trump were to resign. He added that if he had a vote for impeachment, he would have to look at all the evidence, but said “I would very much consider it.”

“People have to be held accountable, and yes, that includes the president. It includes everyone who played a role in what we saw in one of the darkest days in our nation’s history,” said Cox.

Lee meets with Trump lawyers

Meanwhile, Sen. Mike Lee reportedly met with Trump’s defense lawyers on Thursday. Other senators reportedly meeting with the defense lawyers include Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina. Senators act as jurors in impeachment trials.

According to the Deseret News, Lee’s office has not responded to a request for comment.

In the former president’s first impeachment trial, Lee worked behind the scenes with Trump’s legal team.

Lee has previously said the trial is unconstitutional and is also among a majority of Republicans who have signaled they will vote to acquit Trump.

House impeachment manager Diana DeGette, D-Colorado, also mentioned Utah in her presentation to the Senate. Her presentation included slides showing the costs associated with the Capitol riot and afterward.

Utah spent roughly $585,000 for National Guard troops and Utah Highway Patrol troopers to safeguard the state Capitol shortly before Inauguration Day.
