SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) has identified a woman who died from injuries she sustained while hiking at Antelope Island State Park on Friday morning.

DPS officials say the body of Samantha Weigel, 40, of Syracuse, Utah, was found after a short search on Friday night in the Split Rock and Elephant Head area of the park.

According to DPS, injuries found on her body indicated she suffered serious head and neck injuries in the fall.

Friends and family told officials that Weigel was dropped off at the marina of Antelope Island State Park early Friday morning. Her plan, said her family, was to hike the area throughout the day and then reunite with family later Friday afternoon in the Frary Peak Area.

Her family called the police after conducting a brief search of their own.

A search began in earnest at 6 p.m. on Friday night, which included members of the DPS, a DPS helicopter, and Davis County Search and Rescue.

Weigel’s body was found just after 7 p.m., and the retrieval was finished by 11 p.m. At that time, according to the DPS, a medical examiner determined that foul play was not expected in Weigel’s death.

An investigation continues.
