Groundbreaking dates announced for temples in Syracuse and Tooele

SALT LAKE CITY — The groundbreaking dates for two new Utah temples for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Syracuse and Tooele were announced on Tuesday.
The church announced on Tuesday that the groundbreaking for Deseret Peak Utah Temple in Tooele will be held in May and presided over by Elder Brook P. Hales, a General Authority Seventy.
The groundbreaking for the Syracuse Utah Temple will happen in June and be presided over by Elder Kevin R. Duncan, a General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Church’s Temple Department.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions and precautions, the church said that the two ceremonies will be invitation-only events and specific dates will not be released.
Once construction begins on these two temples, they will join five other temples currently under-construction temples in Utah. The five currently being built are: Saratoga Springs, Layton, Orem and Taylorsville and the Red Cliffs Utah Temple in St. George.
Utah currently has 15 dedicated temples, with the most recent of the state’s 23 total temples, in Lindon, still in the planning and design stages.
The church says 2.1 million Latter-day Saints live in Utah, which accounts for about two-thirds of the state’s 3.2 million residents.
