CACHE COUNTY, UT — A 37-year-old jail inmate of the Cache County Jail is back in custody after he reportedly scaled two fences and ran late Sunday morning.

Cache County Jail officials report that Cecil Vijil was taking part in recreation time in a fenced outside area of the jail when he climbed the yard fence and then the jail’s outer perimeter fence.

Lt. Doyle Peck said that, although the inmate ran into the fields next to the jail, officials never lost sight of Vijil. The prisoner was surrounded by members of the Cache County Sheriff’s Office as well as Logan City Police in what Peck described as a “large perimeter.”

“The escapee attempted to evade capture by removing his outer clothing and also by arming himself with a board,” Peck said in a statement.

“But due to the rural area that he was in, officers were able to keep him in sight and away from any citizens.”

Peck said that law enforcement officials communicated with the escaped inmate from a distance and that in just over an hour, had convinced Vijil to return to custody.

After an examination by the jail’s medical staff Vigil returned to the Cache County Jail.  An investigation is underway.
