Don’t get a ticket: Know the difference between solid or striped crosswalks

WEST VALLEY, Utah — Unified Police had officer checkpoints set up in West Valley and Kearns on Wednesday, which resulted in several driver citations for those who were caught driving through crosswalks.
“Just in West Valley, since the beginning of the year we have had 14 auto-pedestrian accidents,” said West Valley police spokesman Jason Johnson. “Those in parking lots, streets and even crosswalks.”
Drivers violated crosswalk laws more than 50% of the time Unified Police were monitoring the two cities, according to officers. And there may have been more violations; however, officers said they were not able to ticket everyone because of the lack of available manpower.
“We had, even in our operation, several near misses where the plainclothes officers almost get hit,” Johnson said.
At one point, it appeared nearly every available officer had someone pulled over during the operation.
Unified Police are urging drivers to remember: As the weather warms up, pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks.
