SALT LAKE CITY — A man from Kaysville, Utah, was arrested Friday morning by FBI Special Agents and members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, for his participation in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol that injured dozens of people and killed five. Utah State Bureau of Investigations assisted with the arrest.

An arrest warrant for Michael Lee Hardin, 50, was issued by the United States Court District of Columbia ahead of his arrest, although it’s unclear how long before.

Hardin was a former officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department before retiring in 2017, the department confirmed to KSL NewsRadio Friday afternoon.

Hardin was arrested on federal charges of “Knowingly Entering or Remaining in any Restricted Building or Grounds Without Lawful Authority; Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building; Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building,” according to a statement from the FBI.

Hardin is one of dozens of people who were arrested, and the second person from Utah to face charges. He was taken into custody without incident.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
