SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Council is seeking to replace its District 2 chair as council members gear up for Andrew Johnston to step down to become the mayor’s director of homelessness policy and outreach. His replacement in District 2 would take over until Jan. 3, 2022; then voters will select someone to serve the remaining two years of Johnston’s term, which is set to expire in 2024.
This comes after Johnston announced his resignation Friday, officially giving his notice of departure Tuesday. As of that day, the council has 30 days to find his replacement, according to the official replacement process outlined by the city council.
The city’s Recorder’s Office will open the application period Monday, with a deadline set for May 10 at noon.
After interested residents file an application, the council will undergo an interview process before selecting an interim replacement. Once selected, the applicant will be sworn in by the city recorder.
To be eligible, applicants must be registered to vote in Salt Lake City, have lived in the district for 12 consecutive months and pass criminal background requirements.
