SALT LAKE CITY– A new interactive fireworks map shows residents of Salt Lake County where fireworks will and will not be allowed this year. Matthew McFarland with the Unified Fire Authority says it allows anyone to type in their address and zoom right in to see their own neighborhoods.
“We worked very closely with each community and their fire marshal to identify block by block what areas are prone to fire hazard,” McFarland told KSL Newsradio.
Fireworks are banned in foothill areas on the eastern and western edges of the Salt Lake Valley, but there many other areas where they pose a significant risk. McFarland says those include parks and streambeds. The reason fireworks are banned is the vegetation in those areas can catch fire easily.
“Grasses and things of that nature that grow fast and prolifically when there is water, but if things dry out the weeds and the grasses all dry out very quickly,” McFarland said.
Fireworks are only legal for two days before and two days after July 4 and July 24, as well as the holidays.
The fireworks map is available on the Unified Fire Authority website.
